Steps to Regaining Your License in Virginia

Virginia ignition interlock laws require that any driver convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) must install an ignition interlock device, including an electronic log device, on every vehicle they own or which is registered to them. [more]

Here’s how to get back on the road after a DUI in Virginia – quickly, safely and legally.

You cannot drive with or without an interlock until you have been issued a restricted license. However, if you enroll in VASAP (Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program) before your court date, you can prequalify for an interlock installation. While you cannot install the device until you’ve been issued a restricted license, prequalifying should help reduce the wait before you get your interlock installed, so you’re on the road sooner. Here are the steps to getting back behind the wheel in Virginia:

  1. Make your court appearance
  2. Report to your local ASAP office. You will receive a list of Ignition Interlock vendors, of which you must choose one within 48 hours
  3. Notify the ASAP office of your choice of vendor. Your ASAP case manager will send an authorization form to the vendor
  4. Call the nearest interlock provider to make an installation appointment. Have the ignition interlock installed at a service location
  5. Submit proof of installation to ASAP supervisor
  6. ASAP will notify DMV that the interlock has been installed. You can go to the DMV and get your license
  7. You’re good to go! But remember…
  8. Come in for regular monitoring. This is essential for proper maintenance of the program as well as a condition for keeping your restricted license
