SoberRide Will Keep Drunk Drivers Off Virginia, Maryland and DC Roads on St. Patrick’s Day

Estimates vary on what percentage of road accidents are alcohol-related, but one fact is clear: the number goes up on St. Patrick’s Day. Each year revelers will leave their parties after one too many green beer and get behind the wheel, with disastrous results.iStock_000013428414Small

In the greater Washington D.C. area – which includes Virginia and Maryland – SoberRide offers free taxi rides to drivers who would otherwise be tempted to drive impaired on St. Patrick’s Day. The program, one of the most successful in the U.S., has provided more than 60,000 safe rides home, and is one of the reasons why alcohol-related road fatalities on St. Patrick’s Day are lower in D.C., Virginia and Maryland than in the nation as a whole.

Taxi rides are covered up to $30, provided the rides are booked using SoberRide’s easy-to-remember number, 1-800-200-TAXI. Rides are also offered to partygoers who need them during the December/January holiday season, Independence Day and Halloween. You can find more information and download a poster here.

There’s no telling how many lives and limbs SoberRide has spared. Like drunk driving awareness programs and ignition interlock laws, SoberRide is one of those valuable efforts that makes the roads safer for us all. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
