While Arresting One DUI, Policeman’s Car is Hit By Another
Yesterday an Illinois state trooper sat in his squad car, writing up a drunk driving suspect he’d just arrested. That’s when his car was struck — by another drunk driver.
What are the odds?
All too good, unfortunately. While this story from East St. Louis seems like one of those wild coincidences – like the woman who’s late for work just one day in her life, the day the office is hit by a falling plane –it isn’t very startling when you look at the numbers. In the United States someone is killed in a drunk-driving crash every 53 minutes, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Amazingly, someone is injured every 90 seconds due to alcohol on the roads.
Fortunately, there were no serious injuries this time. But drunk drivers are getting behind the wheel every day and night. The fight against drunk driving takes the cooperation of law enforcement, legislators who pass strong anti-DUI laws, and all of us who refuse to let anyone we know drink and drive. Until we win that fight, the odds of getting hit by an impaired driver will remain high.
