Holiday drunk driving crashes up over rest of year
The Holidays are one of the happiest times of the year, with Thanksgiving kicking off the entire season. But did you know the Holidays are also one of the most dangerous for drivers? Holiday drunk driving crashes due to drinking drivers cause more fatalities during the Thanksgiving to New Year season than any other time of the year.
Statistics by the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism report that 38 percent of traffic fatalities during the Christmas to New Year period are due to drinking drivers. That number is up by 7% over the rest of the year. During New Year’s alone, 54% of traffic crashes resulting in death are due to drunk drivers, which is up 23% over the year total.
Before you jump straight into the holiday season, be aware of the effects of alcohol on your body by considering the following and always appoint a designated driver prior to drinking alcohol:
- Alcohol interferes with your coordination and driving skills long before you feel drunk.
- The effects of Alcohol last for hours after you’ve taken your last drink.
- Driving late at night with alcohol in your system is especially dangers as you are also fatigued.
- Coffee isn’t helpful to ‘sober’ up from a night of alcohol consumption.
