National Work Zone Awareness Week 2014 is April 7th to 11th
National Work Zone Awareness Week 2014 is coming up this April 7th to April 11th. Now in it’s 17th year, the event has grown from a small awareness campaign within the Virginia Department of Transportation to a large national program that includes most of the United States.
The event is held each April, as that is the traditional beginning of construction season across the USA. Not only do the amount of workers on the road increase, but highway crashes increase as well. An average of seven motorists and one construction worker are killed during a 5 day construction week, and crashes are known to occur when the driver is speeding though the work zone or simply not paying attention to his surroundings.
The goal of National Work Zone Awareness week is to bring attention to roadway safety. With 587 fatalities in work zones in 2011, a number that was up by 11 fatalities in 2010, it is vital that drivers be aware of work zones and slow down in order to protect themselves and construction workers out on the highway.
