Often, we only hear about car breathalyzers (AKA ignition interlock devices, IIDs, breath alcohol ignition interlock devices, or BAIIDs) when they are mandated, but a growing number of people are volunteering to have one installed – either for themselves or for someone they care about.
For most of the scenarios outlined above, an ignition interlock device is the best choice since you can’t drive your car if you do not pass the test. But you could also opt for a portable breathalyzer. So which one is right for you? Ask yourself whether you think that you, or the person you’re getting the device to protect, will always make the best choices when intoxicated. If the answer is no, you are likely safer choosing a car breathalyzer.
