July is National Vehicle Theft Protection Month
Summer is a busy time of the year for many businesses, but did you know the summer season also kicks off the busiest time of the year for car thieves? Recent data released from the National Insurance Crime Bureau shows that July and August are the most popular months for auto theft in the USA. With July officially here, the LoJack Corporation and the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators are promoting July as National Vehicle Theft Protection Month.
On average, a car is stolen once every 43 seconds in the USA, and at least half of those vehicles stolen are never recovered. So how do you prevent vehicle theft from happening to you? First of all, there are two types of car thieves to be on the look out for. Amateur car thieves often work independently and can usually be deterred by common sense safety approaches like always locking your doors, never leaving your keys in the ignition, never leave your car’s engine running when you exit the vehicle, and keeping your valuables out of site if you leave them in the car.
It’s more difficult to protect your vehicle from professional car thieves. Often working in groups or car theft rings, these individuals will steal your vehicle and sell it in other countries or strip it for parts. To deter a professional car thief, consider implementing more advanced safety measures in your vehicle. Items that are both visible and audible, like steering wheel locks, loud car alarms, immobilizers that stop someone from hot wiring your vehicle, and smart keys with built-in computer chips that prevent anyone from starting the car without it may cause your car to be passed by should a thief be attempting to steal it.
